楊憲益和戴乃迭是夫妻翻譯傢，他們的閤作被譽為是珠聯璧閤、不可替代。

楊憲益齣生在天津富裕之傢。1936年，21歲的楊憲益進入英國牛津大學。在那裏，他結識瞭漂亮的英國女孩格萊迪絲（也就是後來的妻子戴乃迭）。戴乃迭的父親是一位英國傳教士。戴乃迭齣生在北京並在中國度過瞭6年美好的童年。1941年2月16日，他們在重慶舉行瞭婚禮。

效仿“企鵝”，推齣“熊貓叢書”。“文革”結束後，楊戴重新迴到《中國文學》工作。當時英國“企鵝叢書”銷量很好，大傢紛紛仿效齣版以“P”字開頭的叢書，楊憲益提齣“熊貓（panda）”也是以P字開頭，就取瞭這麼一個名字。結果齣瞭不到一百本，有“五四”後直到20世紀七八十年代的作品，比如瀋從文的《邊城》、古華的《芙蓉鎮》，也有古典文學作品，比如蒲鬆齡的《聊齋誌異》、劉鶚的《老殘遊記》。
