TOMAS WOLFE, that immensely talented contemporary
of Hemingway and Steinbeck, once wrote: "The rails go west-
ward in the dark. Brother, have you seen starlight on the rails?
Have you heard the thunder of the fast express?"
The answer for most of us, of course, is yes: even if we have
never personally ridden a train, we have at some time or other
heard the thunder of the fast express, and smelled smoke and
cinders and hot diesel oil, and seen the bright Cyclopian eye of a
locomotive s headlight, and listened to the mournful cry of a
whistle or an air horn echoing in the night. And the more
romantically inclined of us have perhaps had secret desires to
ride in an empty boxcar on an outbound freight, or to stand
beside the engineer in the cab of a highballing special, or to
occupy a compartment on the Orient Express bound for Istanbul.
