With a gasp, Sibilla realized why the dogs had been able to enter
the house, for oll a garden bench, in full view by the light spilling
from the study, was Peggy, still in her dark silk dress and stiffly
starched apron, but her frilly cap had come loose and her rich,
dark curls spilled over her shoulders and hid the man who held her
in a passionate embrace. As the dog with a gruff bark bounced
upon the couple, the man looked up and Sibilla recognized him as
the Marquis of Dower.
Valerian chuckled, and drew Sibilla back into the study, closing
the French windows behind them. She was flushed, partially wor-
ried about Peggy and embarrassed at having witnessed such an
intimate scene in the company of a strange man. Valerian stopped
her as she headed quickly for the door, by stepping into her path so
that she collided fully into him. When she tried to move to one
drawing her into a full embrace, to which, to her horror, she re-
:ponded. Because her knees became weak and her legs began to
tremble, she put her arms about his shoulders to prevent herself
from falling, and then discovered that his kisses, which were inter-
rupted by throaty mutt( rs about her beauty and her softness, were
so sweet that she pressed against him, begging for more.
At this moment, Aunt Lucy flung open the partially dosed door
to the study.
