"Our Sun will almost certainly swell out to

become a red giant star. In so doing, Mercury,

Venus, Earth, and Mars will be consumed--

quite simply melted, then vaporized."

"The first effects of a nova outburst on a

planet such as ours wouM be terrible. The sky

remains a brilliant blue but only the molten and

melting remains of great cities point to the re-

cent existence of civilization. The sun has be-

come a killer. With a temperature that has

reached unprecedented and unbelievable

heights, even the sea has evaporated, its bed a

crust of precipitated salts already running

molten. The entire crust of the planet is riven

and fractured by convulsive earth tremors and

the whole sides of volcanoes collapse to release

torrents of lava. The Earth, our once familiar

world, will soon be a cinder. Further rises in

temperature will transform that cinder into

mere superheated vapor."

It is certain; the life-giving Sun will eventually

die--perhaps quietly and with warning, per-

haps in a sudden Earth-incinerating cataclysm.
