Once, many believed that science would
provide a description of the universe that
would make religion obsolete. Theologians,
for their part, had adopted a largely defen-
sive posture, representing themselves as de-
fenders of the faith "once-for-all delivercd"
assuming the progress of science offered
nothing to theology.
