When a patient in New York s
Westside General Hospital is found
dead in bed -- poisoned -- the
night before his scheduled dis-
charge, Bert Swain is called upon
to track down the killer. Bert, P.R.
director of the research center con-
nected with the hospital, has won
his spurs as an amateur sleuth by
bringing the guilty to justice in
Protocol for Murder.
The new case turns out to have
roots going back more than thirty
years . . . to the early childhood of
the poison victim. Bert learns that
he had accused the grownups in a
day-care center of sexually abusing
him and the other preschoolers.
Brought to trial, the mother and
son and young woman helping
them were found guilty and sen-
tenced to prison terms -- their
lives ruined.
Before Bert figures out how past
and present interlock and assembles
all the pieces of the puzzle, his own
life and the lives of Paula, his
daughter, and lover Eve have been
placed at risk.
At the end of his second test as a
detective Bert swears "Never
again!" Wrong: a third adventure
