FOR TOM SAWYER, adventure was always just around the corner. Sometimes,
tired of being the respectable boy his kindly but harassed Aunt Polly felt
he should be, he sneaked out in the dark of night to seek excitement with
his wonderful unrespectable friend, Huck Finn. Sometimes adventure came
to him by accident--when he witnessed a murder in a lonely cemetery,
was surprised by "ghosts" in a haunted house, and got lost in a labyrinthine
cave with the bewitching Becky Thatcher. His was a joyous life, filled with
feuds and friendships, with crazy jokes, narrow escapes, and splendid
schemes.
Mark Twain, author of this classic story of American boyhood, said in
a preface to the 1876 edition: "Most of the adventures recorded in this
book rcally occurred: one or two were experiences of my own, the rest those
of boys who were schoolmates of mine. Huck Finn is drawn from life; Tom
Sawyer also, but not from an individual he is a combination of the char-
acteristics of three boys who I knew. The odd superstitions touched upon
were all prevalent among children and slaves in the West at the period of
this story."
Born in Florida, Missouri, in 1835, Mark Twain grew up in Hannibal,
a sleepy little town on the banks of the Mississippi River very like Tom s
St. Petersburg. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens; and he took
his pen name from the call of the riverboat hands that meant two fathoms
on the sounding line. In his long and varied career he was a printer, a
steamboat pilot, a silver miner, a journalist, and finally a successfhl writer
and lecturer.
Mark Twain traveled far from Hannibal, and the mane of white hair
that characterized him in his later years was as well known in Vienna and
London as in the cities of the United States. He died, at the age of seventy-
live, in his home inRedding, Connecticut. But when we think of him
today, we think of the Middle West in the days before the Civil War, of
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, of,its equally famous sequel, The Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn, and Life on the Mississippi, in all of which a way of life
now past is vividly immortalized.
