Inside Soviet Schools is a fresh and real-
istic appraisal of the Soviet educational
system from state nurseries through high
school. It is based on the author s first-
hand observations in Soviet classrooms
and informal conversations held with
teachers, parents, students, and adminis-
trators during the two years (1969-71) she
lived in Moscow. It also draws from
scholarly journals and articles in the
Soviet press that have reported on con-
troversial educational issues.
The book challenges the myth of Soviet
superiority that became popular in the
United States after the first Sputnik was
launched in 1957 and shows that many of
Russia s educational problems parallel
those facing America. One example is
Soviet failure to produce equality of edu-
cational opportunity: tile inadequacies of
rural schools in Russia can be compared
with those of ghetto schools in America.
Viewing the schools in relation to the
rest of Soviet society, Susan Jacoby shows
how they respond to pressures from the
Russian family, the political establish-
ment, and educational reformers. In a
