Pearl Bailey sees her fellow Ameri-
cans plain. She herself is not an arm-
chair philosopher. She wants to re-
discover active ways to support the
ideals on which the United States of
America was founded. She believes
in encounters with the truth : in busi-
ness, politics, and personal relations.
She thinks we Americans deserve the
truth.
Hurry Up, America. & Spit is a pur-
gative. After reading these personal
observations, the reader might want
to rid himself of the civic "uglies,"
as Miss Bailey calls the dark events
of our time. But Hurry Up is also a
restorative. You will feel better, and
more hopeful, if you read it and
