When Clyde Bumpus was found shot
dead in his boat on the Kentucky River,
there were few residents of Humber Falls
who were unhappy. There were, indeed,
several with various reasons to qualify as
suspects. Interrogated about her hus-
band s murder, Shirley Anne Bumpus
said, "Well, we weren t exactly Tristan and
Isolde." And she did have a boy friend in
her guest house. But she also had an alibi.
So did he. So did the shopping-center
promoter who d been double-crossed by
the victim. So did his discarded secretary-
cum-mistress.
With no clue other than a baby blue
Volkswagen, the two-man Homicide
Squad of little Humber Falls was becom-
ing discouraged, Then a second murder,
that of the proprietor of the Studio One
nightclub, gave the case a whole new
twist.
