My grandfather was M. D. Berlitz, a
linguist who spoke fifty-eight languages and
who invented a unique system of language
teaching. When I first started to speak, I
learned four different languages at the same
time, each exclusively spoken to me by
different members of my family. At this
very early age I did not know that these
were world languages but simply thought
that they were different ways that people
had of speaking which, when one considers
it, is really a good way of defining
languages. I have since acquired about two
dozen more languages through language
study, research, teaching, travel and
residence in various countries, and the
writing of language teaching books.
