It was simply a routinetrial.., until
one of the jurors was offered a bribe. But
that would have been no more than a
passing annoyance to Antony Maitland,
who was leading for the defense, if he
hadn t used a free afternoon to involve
himself in the affairs of Jon Kellaway.
Kellaway was one of London s newest
theater personalities--charged with mur-
der shortly after Maitland s visit.
"His past is shady," Maitland told
his uncle, Sir Nicholas Harding, "and his
friends seem a disreputable lot." But cir-
cumstances seemed to be conspiring to
involve Maitland, and when a second
murder occurred, he soon found himself
in much deeper water than ever before,
especially when his old enemy, Chief
Superintendent Briggs, arrived on the
scene with his own ideas about what was
happening. And last--and worst--of all,
Antony s wife Jenny was in danger.., but
that was something he didn t know until
it was almost too late.
