When Margaret Pride arrives to take
charge of little John, Daisy breathes a sigh
of relief; the English nanny has arrived, to
create order out of chaos and teach John
how to become a gentleman like his father.
Much to Daisy s delight, Margaret settles
into her new job remarkably well. Perhaps
too well.
Daisy, relieved of the burden of her
firstborn, prepares to give birth to a sec-
ond child, with all the sweet and lazy insou-
ciance of a woman of her class. As Daisy
grows larger and less aware of the details
of her domestic surroundings, Margaret
Pride takes charge with the determination
and fervor that her name implies. Daisy,
only too happy to have such a dedicated
addition to her household, does not per-
ceive the dangers that lie ahead.
