A romantic nineteenth-century saga
steeped in extraordinary adversity, The
Healers is the story of two physicians of
different faiths who, defying the mores
of their times, marry and embark on a
courageous journey of personal and pro-
fessional discovery.
David Lilliendahl is a Jewish medical
student in Vienna whose political activism
against the repressive policies of Metter-
nich ruin his family and prevent him from
practicing medicine. Under the strain of
vicious anti-Semitism and heartrending
personal loss, he emigrates to America,
where he finds work as a staff physician
at Jews Hospital in New York City.
There he meets and works beside Mary
Sinclair, the daughter of a prosperous
New York publisher, and the first female
student accepted to L Ecole de Medio
cine in Paris. A strong-willed "modern"
young woman, Mary has earned the repu-
tation of being.a brilliant and outspoken
doctor who demands professional equal-
ity and respect.
