C.S.Lewis(1898-1963)was a fellow and tutor of English at Oxford from 1925 to 1954. He was noted equally for his literary scholarship and for his intellectual and witty writings. Among his most important works are An Allegory of Love and The Screwtape letters, the latter - a humorously ironic treatment of the theme of salvation-bringing him a wide and popular audience. He is also the author of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength, an outer-space trilogy with deeply moral overtones. He wrote children's books-perhaps the best known The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe-and the autobiographical Surprised by Joy. He died during his tenure as a prefessor of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge in 1963.
