Returning to the lonely West Country cottage
that he hastily abandoned five years ago, Mi-
chael Hurst, British author, seeks respite from
writer s block, personal self-doubts and half-
remembered, more nebulous torments. The
tempestuous and desirable Cbristabel, whom
Michael tried to leave behind him, is still in the
village, her marriage to the new vicar too recent
to have banked the fires smoldering within her;
and the coltish Elizabeth has in the seasons of
Michael s absence sprouted from an adoring
adolescent to an intense, yearning young worn an;
and both are part of Michael s coming to terms
with himself and the tortures of his past. But the
key to his peace of mind is held by another man,
the enigmatic John Merrow, who must stand by,
hands tied, and watch Michael work out his own
salvation in the warmth of the old house by the
side of the woods.
