On the telecast of the 1976 Oscar ceremony, there was a film
clip of a fragile, old lady accepting an honorary award from
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Her eyes
were overbright, her wig as patently artificial as that worn by
the boudoir doll sitting beside bet, and as she struggled to find
appropriate words of gratitude, her voice wavered and thinned
out almost to the point of inaudibility. The Oscar ceremony
has always been notorious for exposing the time-ravaged mon-
uments of Hollywood history, but this travesty surpassed all
others in unconscious cruelty.
