主要讲了三种传承方式，一个是秘术学习secret knowing，通过气功学徒的体验与讲述展示了气功是如何与个体生命和情感关联的；第二个是类似师徒传承personal knowing，通过一个老中医的行医和传授，揭示教材与实践之间复杂的互动，二者不是简单的引证书本应用于实践的关系，“经验”成为类似秘术的存在，而对中医深奥知识的理解和洞见都需要通过revelation来了解；最后是标准化学习，作者用自己在中医学院学习的经历表明，规范化的中医学习植根于传统，吸收中西医从过去到现在的不同认识方式，一直处在系统化规范化的努力中。

只看了导言 ways of learning 和结论 styles of knowing，通过标题也能感觉到是偏认识论的研究，放在中文世界不算是新鲜话题，搁在英语世界，再跟几个民族志一对话感觉就不一样了。

Elisabeth Hsu is Reader in Social Anthropology, Convenor of the Masters courses in Medical Anthropology at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Oxford, and Fellow of Green College. Her current research on Chinese medicine explores themes of touch, pain and feelings.

The author became a disciple of a scholarly private practitioner, a Qigong master; attended courses given by a senior acupuncturist and masseur; and studied with undergraduates at the Yunnan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where the standardized knowledge of official Chinese medicine is inculcated. She compares theories and practices of these different Chinese medical traditions, and her fascinating insider's account of traditional medical practices brings out the way in which the context of instruction shapes knowledge.
