Winterwood, a huge English coun-
try estate of brooding immensity
and shadowy secrets, seems like a
sanctuary to Lavinia. For the beau-
tiful and penniless young woman,
hired as companion for the invalid
daughter of the wealthy Meryons,
is fleeing the strange, dark ghosts
of her own scandalous past.
But it is not long before Lavinia is aware that the atmos-
phere of Winterwood is filled with odd menace. The silent
struggle for the fortune of the cantankerous old Lady Tame-
son, who is dying most reluctantly, casts an evil spell over
the entire household. And no one.., not even Lavinia or the
innocent child she is protecting.., is safe from it.
