IN THE SUMMER OF I984, NATIONAL TV NETWORKS AND
newspapers around the country broke what had ap-
peared to be a long-standing taboo. They were once
again covering sightings of UFOs---unidentified flying
objects. A rash of well-documented reports from up-
state New York had made it impossible to continue
ignoring the subject.
When, in the late 1940s, the first witnesses had
reported seeing mysterious lights and incredible craft in
the sky, the media had not been so shy. The sightings
were given wide coverage. But when the government
dismissed the reports, the majority of those who pack-
age the news quickly lost interest.
One exception was The NATIONAL ENQUIRER.
