Through wit, humour and true stories the author manages to make the First World War both interesting and poignant.

A very entertaining 'teen and tween'-oriented look at WWI, told with semi-lighthearted cartoons, and a 'dark' humor style that never gets too macabre, or just 'gross.'

In this 'PC" era, when nobody really wants to discuss the more difficult aspects of history, Deary accomplishes just that, in a way that appeals to readers of any age!

These Horrible Histories books are terrific. They give a view of history different from textbooks - more of a "you are there" feeling. Liberal amounts of humor and "grossness" hold the interest of late-elementary to middle school aged kids - especially boys. The books are, however, very accurate and up to date on facts.
