In recent years, policymakers, politicians, and police throughout the West have made extensive use of "cost-benefit analysis" techniques in analyzing the effectiveness of existing crime and violence-prevention programs and devising new ones. Curiously, Farrington reports that "there is no existing publication that brings together the extant knowledge on the different methods and perspectives, the most up-to-date research findings, and policy perspectives... on cost-benefit analysis of crime prevention." Preventing Crime is intended to fill that gap. The book includes a range of theoretical and empirical articles on the use of cost-benefit analysis techniques in North America, Western Europe, and Australia.
