1894. Kipling, English short-story writer, novelist and poet, who celebrated the heroism of British colonial soldiers in India and Burma, he was the first Englishman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. The Day's Work is a collection of short stories that are of varying quality. The stories have no common theme; are set away from India and feature mostly non-human characters. However, some of the jewels in this collection include The Maltese Cat, which is an enjoyable tale of a polo match from the point of view of the ponies and The Shim That Found Herself, an imaginative tale of the maiden voyage of a ship as experienced by the various components which make it up.
