When the body of Gillian Lestrange is found in a seemingly decrepit cottage, it emerges that she was a ghost writer engaged in writing the memoirs of Lavinia (Vinnie) Latham, a retired spy who is nowhere to be found. At first the murder is treated as mistaken identify, but Superintendent Gregory Summers discovers that the murdered woman was Gillian Lester, the victim in a high profile case fifteen years ago, missing presumed dead. She never came forward to reveal she was alive, not even to her mother. What could have happened to make Gillian hide herself all these years?
