For Evan and Lu, teenage romance in the 1950s is very good, marriage to other partners in the 1960s is very bad, and coping with single life in the 1970s is downright ugly. The three-decade-long relationship between Evan Fielding and Lucinda Graham chronicles the true life and times of typical young Americans of the post-war generation. Meeting and falling in love is easy, but their love falls victim to youthful error and the times. Lucinda is torn between wanting to please her man, be a good mother, and participate in the womenas movement. Evan neither understands her motives nor the changing relationships between men and women. The challenge each of them faces is how to forgive and learn from the past.
