Hispano-Arabic strophic poetry of the 11th and 12th centuries and the Provencal lyrics of the slightly earlier period have not been widely studied in their own right, most authors preferring to concentrate on the influences that produced them. Prof Haidar has produced the first book to focus on these fascinating literary forms and the relationship between them. The author applies an objective approach in a wide ranging semantic study of the languages of Arabic love poetry and of the Provencal lyrics, and finds them to be two immiscible quantities. Specific love themes traced back to Hispano-Arabic literature are shown to the product of hearsay knowledge. This ground breaking work will be of interest to Arabists, Hebraists, Hispanists and Romance scholars and to all students of literature.
