Emily Baxter had dealt with what happened to her quite well until she is arrested for killing her foster father Eugene Thompson, who raped her when she was twelve years old. She has no memory of the killing even though the evidence points to her. Dr. Randall Mason is asked to do a psychiatric evaluation to help her to remember what happened that night. He discovers that she has multiple personalities. Each personality has a motive for killing Eugene so Emily is found incompetent to stand trial and is sentenced to the mental institution under Dr. Masonas care.
