In the mid-Georgian era, 1750-1785, a form of domestic neo-classicism arose that came to named after the architect, Robert Adam. This book provides a survey of the Adam-style house from the outside in. It begins with the architectural shell and the styles for the windows, doors and ironwork, moving inside to discuss the decorative plasterwork, which is the hallmark of the style, colour schemes, furniture and details of upholstery and silver. The style was also influential in the developing United States, and this book looks not just at the great houses that represented the apogee of the style, but also at middle-class town houses in Britain and America, creating a work helpful for those involved in renovation and decor.
