這本書，作者對腓特烈二世抱有極端負麵的看法。但是呢，寫著寫著，他發現，為瞭把腓特烈描寫的盡可能既蠢又壞，他必須把腓特烈的對手寫的更蠢，否則無法解釋他們為什麼花瞭七年多時間，以絕對優勢的人力物力資源也無法製服他的原因。一本應該也算是提供瞭不少有用資料的曆史書，嚮大傢展示瞭如何從頭到尾用最極端的觀點來闡釋特定曆史事件會造成多大的扭麯。
