The growing importance of cultural differences has led to the emergence of groups whose codes and composition call into question those of long-established communities, encouraging them to redefine themselves in new ways. This work examines the question, showing how all established bodies hesitate between withdrawal in the face of adversity and a new kind of fulfilment through the acceptance of new approaches to plurality. It evokes the problems facing European societies in daily life and in institutional terms as a result of the current form of this challenge - migrations and the intermingling of previously separate populations.
