'England,' writes the author, 'is a living guide book to cover two thousand years of civilization. It's difficult to travel ten miles in any direction without coming across some aspect of English history, revealed to the observant by the contours of the fields, the direction of the roads, or the survival of some ancient trackway.'
2000 Years of England provides an excellent overview of this history, carefully reconstructing the past for the reader from the many rich traces that remain - from the tumuli and forts of the ancient Britons and the elaborate villas of their Roman conquerors to the manor houses of the medieval period. The complex architecture of the later Gothic cathedrals and Tudor mansions is discussed in fascinating detail in addition to furniture and the manner and habits of the England.
