Description: "York House Suite," named after the hotel in Lisbon, Portugal, where the drawings were executed, marks the beginning of a working method for the American artist Donald Baechler in which he creates blue ink-wash drawings and collages, all in a hotel room, around a central theme or themes. In this case, some of the drawings are based on formal models found on a primitive Portuguese toy which lets children construct a limited number of human forms from a set of wooden shapes. Others are isnpired by paintings in the Portuguese National Museum, located across the street from the York House Residencia. This beautifully produced volume includes along with the drawings a selection of fictional writings by the Greek author Demosthenes Davvetas.
