Many Romantic themes can be found in the extraordinarily rich oeuvre of Paul Klee (1879–1940). The artist conveys fables and fairy tales in his images of gardens, parks, and ruins, or in his nocturnal pieces, which are among some of the most beautiful of his motifs. Defining his style in 1915 as “coolly Romantic,” Klee spoke of his discovery of southern and eastern lands, while angels and gods, demons, marionettes, and dolls appeared in his visual cosmos.
This publication, with intriguing writing by Brigitte Reinhardt, Dorothea Richter, and Tulliola Sparagni, presents Klee’s many references to Romantic tradition and philosophy and sheds light on the most important motifs in the artist’s oeuvre: landscape and figure, cosmos and marionette. The book represents the first comprehensive examination of this central subject area.
