From Library Journal
Oates, lecturer and ham radio operator, played scores of records backwards in trying to disprove the belief that Satanic messages were embedded in rock music. After finding the purported Satanic messages, he reasoned that backward messages must exist in human speech. In this book, he contends that these unconscious messages reveal our true motives and desires, and are learned during infancy before forward speech is mastered. Examples are drawn from Operation Desert Storm, the Kennedy assassination, therapy sessions, and his own family. Although Oates's book is original and fascinating, his theory is difficult to prove or disprove, especially since the use of special audio equipment is required. In addition, he seems more intent on selling his training programs than educating the reader. Recommended with reservations.
