An exploration of the theological significance of congregational song, asking how music has meaning for its singers, and considering the importance of contemporary music worship. Brian Wren argues that a hymn is a complex art form, deserving of recognition and study for its contributions to worship, education and pastoral care. Because text, tune and the combination of both when sung have theological meaning and formative power, ministers and other worship leaders have as much need to learn about them as their musical counterparts.
