A composer, fleeing an empty existence in New York City, takes a journey with his mistress to one of the few remaining areas of the world not yet touched by civilization -- the upper reaches of a great South American river -- on the pretext of collecting primitive musical instruments. As he strikes deeper into the jungle, he imagines traveling back in time retracing the lost steps of mankind to a point where the work of "progress" may be undone. Los pasos perdidos describes his search, his adventures, and the extraordinary decision he makes in a village that seems truly to be outside history.
