Between 1979 and 1988, celebrated photographer Graciela Iturbide made a series of visits to Juchitan, Mexico, where - in her own words - she photographed the community and their way of life "in complicity with the people."Located in the state of Oaxaca, in the south of Mexico, Juchitan is an ancient matriarchal society that is open and generous, yet fiercely independent. Since the early twentieth century, the women of Juchitan - their dress and manner in particular - have become national symbols of strength and pride.Iturbide's stunning photographs perfectly capture the heart and soul of this rare matriarchal society, and give us a rare insight into the private and public lives of its inhabitants.
