The series of annual reports from the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI) explores the key issues facing higher education institutions in the twenty-first century, with special emphasis on the theme of the social commitment of universities. The third report, New Challenges and Emerging Roles for Human and Social Development, includes papers from 52 eminent scholars from around the world discussing present and future challenges for higher education role for human and social development in the context of globalization. The role of higher education (HE) is complex and vital with a wide range of challenges emerging including political, economic and social implications. Most significant are the possibilities on knowledge itself, which are strongly influencing the role and the responsibility of the university in society. This report presents the main challenges and trends that affect HE roles, and how they are being and should be handled to contribute to human and social development, and the emerging trends of HE and its implications for education, research, civil engagement and institutional development. It also includes a Delphi poll of more than 214 key experts and practitioners providing their views on the subject, and contains supporting statistics, analytical maps and a detailed bibliography. This is an essential report for university leaders, academics, administrators and policy-makers concerned with the issues relating to the higher education role for human and social development in the twenty-first century.
