Kate Wynne is an Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program marine mammal specialist and an associate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She lives and works in Kodiak, Alaska, but has been involved in the documentation and mitigation of marine mammal interactions with humans throughout the United States for more than two decades. Since 1988 she has been involved in monitoring marine mammal stocks and documenting their interactions with humans throughout Alaska. She has actively collaborated with a variety of state, federal, and academic researchers to monitor population trends, mortality, and diets of pinnipeds and cetaceans that most directly interact with Alaskan fisheries.
Guide to Marine Mammals of Alaska is the only book that exclusively covers all 29 marine mammal species of Alaska. Each whale, porpoise, dolphin, seal, sea lion, walrus, sea otter, and polar bear is described and illustrated. Color photos and surface profile drawings show Alaska marine mammals and compare similar species, and color range maps show distribution. Mammal characteristics and descriptions are presented in a format that allows fast, accurate identification at sea. The 80-page, award-winning, richly illustrated book is printed on durable water-resistant paper, and is wire-bound to give years of service outdoors and in the office, classroom, and home. The 2012 (fourth) edition of this award-winning book has been brought up to date with the latest range and status information.
