The book gives a flavour for the holiday from a global perspective. The photographs in Hanukkah show Americans celebrating, but also include Jews in Ghana, Uganda, India, Israel, Peru, Poland, and several other countries lighting menorahs, spinning dreidels, and cooking latkes (potato pancakes). Both visually and through the text, the book focuses on cultural aspects of Hanukkah: traditions, food, types of celebration. The extensive back matter starts with fun facts (such as: U.S. astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman brought a menorah and a dreidel on his space shuttle mission in 1993. He spun the dreidel, but he didn't light the menorah candles because the shuttle would have exploded). Also in the back matter: the author's sure-to-please latke recipe; Haunkkah blessings and a Hanukkah song; how to play dreidel; a map showing the locations of the photographs in the book; a resource list of books, videos, and Web sites; and, a note from Rabbi Shira Stern, the book's consultant. Rabbi Stern's note, aimed at parents and teachers, helps put the holiday in a greater cultural and religious context.
