The objective of this book is to develop a unified theory for how to apply several of the techniques of operations research to analyze how to design and operate a wide variety of manufacturing and service systems, while taking the market and operating risks of these systems fully into account. The Japanese have tended to lead the way in developing path-breaking methods of production and operations management in recent decades. Indeed some very key manufacturing initiatives have originally come from Japan.
