The sulfurous Clothilde could be Paul Morand's Salome; removed from the calm delights of Venices, "Hecate and Her dogs" takes place in a contrastive setting. Sent off to manage a bank branch in Africa after the First World War he encounters Clothilde, the woman who dominates him in order to lead him to his own destruction with the most guilty of pleasures. This is to be an effectively venereal encounter from which he is unable to recover. "Hecate et ses chiens" was adapted for the cinema in 1982, starring Lauren Hutton.
