I'm Professor of Political Science at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna, BC. From 2005-07, I was postdoctoral fellow in the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University. Among my research interests are comparative genocide studies (I was selected as one of "Fifty Key Thinkers on the Holocaust and Genocide" for the forthcoming book by that title), gender and international politics, and mass media and political transition. My recent books include "The Scourge of Genocide: Essays and Reflections" (Routledge, 2013); "In Iran: Text & Photos" (Lulu Publishing, 2013); "Genocide: A Comprehensive Introduction" (Routledge, 2nd edition, 2010); and "Gender Inclusive: Essays on Violence, Men, and Feminist International Relations" (Routledge, 2009). I'm a widely-published Creative Commons photojournalist (see my Global Photo Archive at http://www.flickr.com/adam_jones), and I serve as executive director of Gendercide Watch, a Web-based educational initiative. In the last two decades, the field of comparative genocide studies has produced an increasingly rich literature on the targeting of various groups for extermination and other atrocities throughout history and around the contemporary world. However, the phenomenon of 'genocides by the oppressed', that is, retributive genocidal actions carried out by subaltern actors, has received almost no attention. The prominence in such genocides of non-state actors, combined with the perceived moral ambiguities of retributive genocide that arise in analyzing genocidal acts 'from below', have so far eluded serious investigation. "Genocides by the Oppressed" addresses this oversight, opening the subject of subaltern genocide for exploration by scholars of genocide, ethnic conflict, and human rights. Focusing on case studies of such genocide, the contributors explore its sociological, anthropological, psychological, symbolic, and normative dimensions.
