Internationally renowned photographer Sandro Miller hasbeen photographing people for over thirty years. He becameinterested in photography at the age of sixteen, upon seeing thework of Irving Penn, and since then has devoted his time andpassion to making expressive images.With numerous award-winning projects to his credit, Milleris one of today's foremost photographers. His work has beenfeatured in The New Yorker, Time, Newsweek, Forbes, Details,Esquire, Stern, Wired, and ESPN magazines, and has beenexhibited worldwide. His most recent solo exhibition premieredat the Scavi Scaligeri International Center for Photography inVerona, Italy.Miller currently has three books in print. His first effort wasa collaboration with Michael Jordon titled I Can't Accept NotTrying. His second, published by Schirmer Mosel Verlag andtitled American Biker, features a collection of striking bikerportraits. His most recent is a comprehensive catalogue fromthe Scavi Scaligeri exhibition titled Sandro Verona: figure eritratti (Sandro Verona: Figures and Portraits).Three additional books are forthcoming: the first, BloodBrothers, documents the sport of boxing worldwide; the secondcaptures the visual drama of the legendary Spanish bullfighterMatador Joselito; the third, Nudes on Plexi, will offer a uniqueexploration of the human body photographed through Plexiglas.
In the introduction to this volume, Chicago-based photographer Sandro Miller writes, The people of Cuba provided me with faces that told a million stories--stories of war, of love, of heartache and pain, of hard work and determination--faces beaten up by the sun and the heat, but most of all faces that still had pride running deep within the pores of their skin." Miller was granted official permission to photograph Cuban athletes despite the ban, in place since 1959, on photographing sports figures in that country. Imagine Cuba 1999-2007 collects Miller's lush color and black-and-white portraits of athletes, young and old, against the backdrop of Cuba's streets and gyms, along with his sensitive diaristic narrative.
