E. Ambrose Webster (1869-1935) was among the earliest and most accomplished American modernists. His rhapsodic landscapes of blazing sunlight and explosive colour are startling even today for their innovation. He was an artist in whom Edward Hopper 'could find no flaw', while Richard Diebenkorn thought Webster painted some of the most vigorous and notable colour essays in the history of American art. Webster also received accolades when he exhibited in the famous 1913 Armory Show and in the 1925 Paris International Exposition. "E.
