A descriptive investigation into medical deformities and mysterious ailments of the 19th century with commentary by two prominant ophthamolic surgeons of the period, Dr. Walter L. Pyle and Dr. George M. Gould. The original illustrations are included from the 1901 edition. The first volume covers examinations of topics as diverse as unconscious impregnation, fecundity in the old, sympathetic male nausea of pregnancy, abdominal section and delivery by cattle horns, delivery by a cannonball, the reported birth of fifteen children – quindecaplets! – interesting instances of hermaphroditism, the “Elastic-Skin Man,” “Dog-Face Men,” double epiglottis and double voice, and a study of the miracles of longevity, such as an English countess who supposedly lived to the age of 140.
