This book develops a framework for the analysis of scientific experimentation and applies it to the experimental field of economics. The author articulates the products of experimentation and analyses scientific experimentation incorporating both the 'material' and the 'social' dimensions of knowledge production. This means that the appraisal of the products of experiments takes into account the actual interventions in the material world and the overall context in which these interventions take place. The book brings to the fore, firstly, the epistemic role of the participation of human subjects in economics experiments and the causal efficacy of institutions in constraining and enabling human behaviour; and secondly, the role of the social and socially established practices in overcoming the methodological difficulties associated with experimenting with humans as well as the effect of individual and collective biases.
