Famed mountain man Barnaby Syke and his two wives, Victoria of the Crow and Mary of the Shoshone, lead a party of tubercular young people to the South Western desert. The ailing travellers hope to find a cure in the warm, dry climate near the Virgin River. Syke and his wives must safely lead their charges across Utah at a time of heightened tension between the federal government and the Latter-day Saints. Syke soon discovers that other wagon companies on the trail fear the sick and blame them for every ill event along the route. Taking a party of ailing people along the California trail requires every bit of skill and courage that Syke and his wives can muster...And hovering over the trip is the looming catastrophe of war.
