Not only does CPP interfere with a woman's physical and mental health, it can wreak havoc in relationships and destroy intimacy and even marriages. Some sufferers even find their livelihoods threatened when they cannot sit for prolonged periods. In more than 60 per cent of the cases, women suffer in silence. Even when they do seek medical help, what they find is often inadequate as most doctors, even gynecological specialists, are not heavily trained in recognizing and treating CPP. Susan Bilheimer has herself been a CPP patient. Robert J. Echenberg, MD, who specializes in CPP diagnosis and care, has treated more than 400 women with the disorder. Their book, which is laced with statements and interviews from many among the 500 women and 100 men who answered their survey on CPP, also shares the latest research on the condition. Most important, effective treatments for CPP, as well as the depression and other psychological fallout it may cause, are described in detail.
