By the time she's a teenager, Gertrude Ravenscombe has a heart as black as the coal that comes out of the mines her father toils in every day. Although she never loves, Gertrude does give birth to a baby boy. She names him Luther for no particular reason, and even though he annoys her with his good-natured personality, she can never bring herself to harm him. Luther eventually marries and has a child of his own, Genevieve, leaving his mother free to go about her evil plotting.
